About Osprey
Osprey started in Santa Cruz, California in 1974, at a single sewing machine. Founder Mike Pfotenhauer had grown up backpacking in Oregon with gear that fitted badly, so he asked his mother to teach him to sew and built his first pack at sixteen; the shop he opened in the front of his rental house made custom-fitted packs to order, one at a time, by hand. Half a century on, Osprey is headquartered in Cortez, Colorado, and every product design has still passed through Pfotenhauer's hands. The company's most telling commitment is the All Mighty Guarantee, introduced in 2009: Osprey will repair any damage or defect on any pack, free of charge, whether it was bought in 1974 or yesterday — and if it can't be repaired, they replace it.
